Battlegroup Sovereign by Vince-T Battlegroup Sovereign by Vince-T
The Sovereign's a new model I've been working on for the past time. Derived from the Dominance-classe ([link] [link] or [link]) it moves its forucs from a fleet carrier to the more fitting role of a battleship.

The Sovereign's design follows the common dagger-shaped style of the various Star Destroyer types from Star Wars, while introducing elements of my own Blue Phantom universe, such as the pair of heavy fusion cannons at the bow plus several other design traits. Sort-of a crossover. :)

This image is one of several I created for the ship's profile on my homepage (www.vince-t.de), showing the Sovereign and its task group of Predator Cruisers and Katana Frigates.

NOTE: The Sovereign-class Battlecruiser is not to be confused with the Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyer

Nothing's missing. They're different ships, sharing only the name. My design - a Battlecruiser - has nothing to do with the Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyer.
As for the TIEs ... eh no, they don't. vince-t.deviantart.com/art/Pre…
I designed that TIE around 2004, long before SWTOR.

Oh you're a smartass, eh?
Well keep up the trash talk. I know I haven't copied anything from anywhere safe for taking inspiration from general Star Wars design traits.
So keep blabbing if you will, I'm done with you.

Sorry.
(I know you didn't copy if you mention SWtOR instead of KotOR... That mean you didn't seen KotOR cinématics...)

Spectacular view, especially when compared with the normal Star Destroyers.

Thank you. Just to point out, those ships looking like normal star destroyers are only Frigates, about half the size of the Imperator-class.

There seems to be two classes of the smaller destroyers. The one in the front has small wings at the back. The two near it, one above and one beneath the big ship, don't have these wings. The destroyers of Episodes IV, V and VI were those without wings; they were simply massive wedges.

I should have mentioned the different shading is great, especially when looking at the very dark one underneath the huge destroyer.

Well the have to use ALOT of low poly models to garrentee a decent framerate, after all Nomada has a featus for superships 4fps gameplay isn't very fun

Impressive, though how does it compare to the Executor size wise?

That depends which interpretation of the Executor's length you fancy.
The Sovereign is 13.3km, so about a quarter smaller than the Executor (going by the 17.6km theory)

Nope, own design. (another angle: [link])
Sovereign Class Batttlecruiser (not to be confused with the Sovereign class Dreadnought)

I admit some similarities though, got one artwork facing the two off: [link]

I build the models in an older version of Rhino 3D. The textures I create in Corel Photo Paint, that's also where I add the various after-effects to the renders.

Question for ya mate? Do you design these ships for fun, or outta for some other reason?

just for fun mostly. They're actually fan-made add-on craft for X-Wing Alliance.

Sweet, you say they're fan-made; how would a person do that, or are they drawn, kinda like a schematic, then forwarded to you and you render them 3d?

Vince-T Featured By Owner Apr 27, 2010  Hobbyist Digital Artist
Not exactly. With fan-made I was referring to myself. All of custom designs I made myself. Some of them like these are inspired on common Star Wars-esque design traits, others I did all from scratch

There's an exception, the Valiant-class Republic Cruiser, which I indeed built on request from some rough sketches.

Ah, that would explain a few things. I guess the reason I was wondering is because a couple of your designs look kinda similar to an SSD design that I've trying to get down, and I was curious as to what software you used to design your craft, because the level of detail behind them is astounding.

Don't be fooled, most of it is bump mapping XD. If you compare them to other starship models available on the net, they're actually quite low-detailed.

I use an old version of Rhino 3d for the models and Corel Photo Paint for the textures, btw

Interesting, I've never really seen better quality 3D renders of custom ships.
Rhino 3D and Corel, never heard of those, are they commercial use designer programs?

Sort of, although many professional artists tend to use Adobe Photoshop rather than Corel.

It's much smaller than the Sovereign or Executor SSD, about 13km.

Thank you. The reason I asked was becuase I've been thinking of writing a Star Wars fan fic for a while now, and I needed ship ideas. It would be several centuries after the books and movies, so I could use all original characters and warships. I'd love to use the Sovereign-class, if that's ok with you. Of course I'd give you a shoutout in my author's notes section! I love the ship pictures you've done so far, they are all incredible, keep up the amazing work!

P.S. Executor is 19km right? There's always a lot of argument about that one, due to size comparisons with the Imperial-class and several authors write different lengths.

Heh, I am always part of the faction claiming the SSD to be 17.6, going by a quote from Lucas saying that it's 11 times bigger than the ISD. But I suppose the argument will last for eternigy. XD

Yeah, I suppose you could put that one in. I actually designed it for a series of battle threads taking place in an alternative SW reality some 19 years after endor, but since it's non-canon I see no harm done if you put it in your story.

Reminds me that I have a ton of more artwork sitting around here that needs posting :)
